MTV ANNOUNCES UNPLUGGED SCREEN DATES

MTV Australia has announced the screen dates for the first two Unplugged shows, featuring Gang of Youths and Amy Shark and shot in Melbourne last week before 400 guests for each.

Gang of Youths’ 75-minute set goes to air on August 19 before being issued as a DVD and for download.

The show kicked off with singer David Le’aupepe flying solo on Let Me Down Easy and Fear & Trembling before the band amped it up with Keep Me In The Open, Deepest Sighs, Frankest Shadows and ending on a high with Go Farther In Lightness and Still Unbeaten Life.

Shark’s 13-song set with her three-piece saw her surrounded by hundreds of candles, which added to the ambience of Drive You Mad, Leave Us Alone Weekends and current single I Said Hi, and covers of Vance Joy‘s Riptide and Wheatus‘ Teenage Dirtbag, and irresistible finale, Adore

She also augmented the intimacy of the concept with lengthy stage patter about how and why the songs came together.

The Shark performance, filmed a week before she heads off to tour North America, hits the screens on September 16.


 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ONE NIGHT STAND

Volunteers are needed for triple j’s One Night Stand concert at St Helens, Tasmania, on September. 1

Break O’Day council mayor Mick Tucker called for more than 100, to help with pre- and post-event set up, bag checks, patron supervision and rubbish collection.

Volunteers will need to have a Working with Vulnerable People card, which can be obtained through Service Tasmania or online through the Consumer Building and Occupational Services website for around $20.

They’ll get an official triple j volunteer souvenir T-shirt

TEG REBRANDS RESEARCH DIVISION

Ticketing, live entertainment and data analytics business TEG has rebranded its online research business TEG Rewards to TEG Insights.

“The rebrand to TEG Insights is the final piece in TEG’s strategy to activate the insights drawn from Australia’s largest consumer research panel of one million people and to integrate with our powerful data analytics and digital marketing capabilities,” chief executive Geoff Jones said.

He added, “TEG Insights is now at the heart of a dynamic group of businesses leveraging advanced technologies across ticketing, live entertainment, data and digital.”

TEG Rewards was set up in 2007, and since then used 2,4 million people as sources of its research and insights, and shared rewards worth over $10 million.


MORE SEXUAL ASSAULT CLAIMS DOG AUSSIE MUSIC CIRCLES

Police are reportedly investigating claims that an 18-year old woman was sexually assaulted at Splendour in the Grass on the Sunday night at around 11pm.

At the same time, over 100 people were busted over drug issues at the festival, while a 42-year old man faces Byron Bay Local Court on September 11 on allegations of trespass, threatening a security guard with a plank of wood and kicking him on the Saturday night.

Over in Adelaide, a court dispute between Chris Carpenter, founder and managing director of community radio station Hills Radio, and Penelope Herbert, former board member and volunteer, has surfaced in the media.

Carpenter is alleging defamation after she referred to him as a “predator” on social media.

She filed a defence to the Adelaide Magistrates Court detailing lewd comments and unwanted sexual propositions, and physical indecent assault.


AUSTRALIA POST LICKS AC/DC STAMP OUTCRY

Australia Post has made a comeback, after its new set of collectible AC/DC stamps to celebrate their achievements turned sour with fans and media.

Triple M and Noise 11, in particular, gave AP a good slapping (“You complete fucking fuckheads!”) for using the American album covers for High Voltage and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap in the $23 set instead of the original Australian ones, and including the ’74 Jailbreak EP which was an overseas release only.

Aussie Post responded that those in the collection “reflect the biggest-selling AC/DC albums worldwide” and added: “We’re thrilled to showcase this terrific achievement with AC/DC.”


EMINEM BLOCKED OVER E13 CLOTHES LINE

 Eminem’s application to trademark his new clothing line as E13 is being blocked.

Fashion designer Clement Brown of the Three Thirteen shop in Detroit has objected saying he’s held the trademark since 2010.

Eminem’s clothing line logo turns the “E” backward so it appears as a  number three, creating the visual effect of Detroit’s area code, 313.

Brown says he respects the rapper but underlines that it’s, “imperative that we have ownership of our creations.”


DRIVE TALKING

The National Transportation Safety Board is the US has been forced to rush out a plea for people to stop jumping out of their moving cars to dance to the Drake track In My Feelings.

It started with comedian Shiggy posting a video of him dancing to the track with the caption, “KEKE DO YOU LOVE ME?

Celebs as Will Smith, Ciara, DJ Khaled and Charlamagne Tha God followed suit.

As their videos went viral, Drake fans took it a step further, filming themselves leaping out of moving cars before the dance.

There were, as to be expected, tears before teatime – or in one case, a bang! and splat! when one fan got a feeling not expected.


ARTS SA HOLDS RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOUR WORKSHOPS

Arts SA, which makes it a provision that grants recipients must adopt and implement a Respectful Behaviours policy and procedure, is offering a series of free Respectful Behaviours Training Workshops to funded organisations and the wider arts and cultural sector.

The workshops will be delivered by Cecilia White, director of Perks People Solutions and held at St Paul’s Creative Centre.

CARDI B GETS FREE CHIPS FOR LIFETIME

Cardi B might have had to cancel shows with Bruno Mars because she “… underestimated this motherhood thing.”

But she’ll certainly be able to stay at home and enjoy the flood of goodies from corporations to celebrate her mumhood.

The Mexican grill chain Chipotle sent her enough free chips and guacamole cards to last a lifetime.

The chain said it was inspired by Cardi’s lyrics on the Jennifer Lopez and DJ Khaled-assisted Dinero, “Look, they gon’ do what I say so, Cardi B and J.Lo/ Talk behind my back, but never up in my face, though/ I just want my money, chips, guac and queso/ Y’all can kiss my ass, dame un beso,”


Q MUSIC REVAMPS VALLEY FIESTA

QMusic, the new producer of the Valley Fiesta street party in Brisbane’s entertainment precinct Fortitude Valley returns for its 22nd year with a new look incorporating live music, theatre and arts.

The new five-day format (August 29—September 2) will draw 65,000 punters.

Lord mayor Graham Quirk said, “Valley Fiesta has been showcasing the best of Brisbane’s music and arts scene since launching in 1997, celebrating the work of local acts and showing just why our city is regarded as a great place to live, work and relax.

“This year’s Fiesta will include a range of free and ticketed events across the Fortitude Valley precinct, with a number of local venues, laneways and shops all involved, as well as exciting outdoor performances, theatre and art installations.

“Council is dedicated to creating new lifestyle and leisure opportunities for all ages to enjoy and Valley Fiesta is one of more than 50,000 festivals, events and markets we help to deliver each year.”


MUSIC VICTORIA CALLS FOR ADVISORY PANEL NOMS

Music Victoria is calling for nominations to join its Artist’s Advisory Panel for a two-year term.

The panel was established to identify and consider issues facing Victorian contemporary artists and to provide recommendations and advice to Music Victoria.

The association is looking to recruit new members who reflect a broad cross-section of artists across genre, demographic, gender/gnc and CALD backgrounds.

DO METALLICA USE STREAMING DATA FOR LIVE SETS?

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek claims that Metallica uses data from the streaming service to plan specific setlists based on what’s popular in a particular city.

Ek made the claim when talking to financial analysts after the release of Spoify’s latest financial postings.

“You have an artist like Metallica, who changes their setlist on a city-by-city basis just by looking at Spotify data to see which the most popular songs happened to be in that city.”

Metallica has always maintained that it changes its setlist in each city depending on which songs went down best in that city in earlier visits.


MUSICACT LOOKING FOR PROGRAM MANAGER

Canberra-based MusicACT, is scouting an experienced and passionate program manager to work with the committee to develop and deliver a strategy to develop the sector.

This will include delivering a series of workshops on writing, recording, touring, management and promotion. It will also provide support for musicians and the organisations around them.

FORMER MAYOR SUES COMMUNITY RADIO

Darryn Lyons, former mayor of Geelong in Victoria, is suing community radio station 94.7 The Pulse, which is run by charity Diversita.

He claims he was defamed when presenter Greg McHenry described his nightclubs as “drug dens”.

The station apologised but, Lyons maintained in court papers, not the presenter.


EMME REACHES 1M SPOTIFY PLAYERS

Emerging Sydney-based producer ‘ËMMË (Emlyn Dodd), who started out at a young age playing flute and drums, has notched up 1 million Spotify plays.

These have included festival-ready trap sounds of Bad Mind which reached over 886,000 Spotify plays, and Good Love which was also added to Spotify’s ‘Monster Dance Hits’ and ‘New Dance Beats’ playlists where it received over 350,000 plays.

New single Good Love (through America’s Elysian Records) crossed over into major radio and also added to various Spotify playlists.


UPDATE ON MOLLY MELDRUM STATUE, MURAL

The City of Yarra has updated news on a bronze statue of Molly Meldrum AM and a mural which it is creating thanks to a $40,000 Creative Victoria grant.

The Meldrum statue will be by Melbourne-based artist Louis Lauman, and be on Wangaratta Street Park, located in Richmond behind the Corner Hotel.

A ‘Wall of Music’ mural, by Melbourne stencil artist 23rd Key depicts a sea of hands of adoring music fans at the Corner Hotel, flanked by gig posters.

He has worked with the Corner’s photographer in residence to choose a crowd scene.


AUSSIES ABROAD #1: POND FOR NORTH AMERICA

Pond are off on an extensive North American headline tour this October and November.

It starts with an appearance at Desert Daze Festival, alongside Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Death Grips and more.

Last year, in the wake of rave reviews for The Weather, the band hit the stages in London, Europe, North America, Canada and Asia, in the past year,

Festivals included Reading and Leeds, End of the Road, Primavera Sound, St Jerome’s Laneway, Boston Calling, Bonnaroo and The Governor’s Ball.

Pond just dropped a new imaginative eight-minute track Burnt Out Star, their first new music since The Weather, and their first through Spinning Top Records/ Caroline.


AUSSIES ABROAD #2: BETWEEN YOU AND ME TO JAPAN

Between You And Me, as part of run behind debut album, Everything Is Temporary (Hopeless Records) are off to Japan for three dates.

They play Nagoya (August 27), Osaka (28) and Tokyo (30) before an East Coast Australian run September 14—23.

Says guitarist Jai Gibson, “For us, being able to play music internationally has always been a dream of ours and for that to begin in the beautiful country that is Japan is unbelievable.

“Some of us have never even been overseas so we are extremely excited!”


AUSSIES ABROAD #3: DYKES IN GERMANY

Country music singer Emma Dykes makes her first trip abroad in Germany for three weeks from August 8.

She hopes to pick up some inspiration as she is currently writing her second album.


AUSSIES #4: G FLIP IN NZ

G-Flip’s Australian shows in the spring will be preceded by two shows in New Zealand, in Wellington (August 31) and Auckland (September 1).

Flip’s shows this year included showcases at Brighton’s The Great Escape and Austin’s SXSW, a sold-out debut Australian headline tour, a string of UK summer dates and a Pale Waves support slot.

After NZ/Australia she returns to the UK and EU which also includes a spot on the bill at Pitchfork festival in Paris.


 JARROW JOIN ANTI-WOMEN’S VIOLENCE BENEFIT

Jarrow are among those playing a concert of solidarity in Melbourne called Cancel Violence Against Women with donation entry.

All proceeds will be distributed to organisations such as WIRE, Safe Steps, IWDA, Carrie’s Place, WISHIN and Djirra, which provide resources to victims of abuse + assault as well as financially contributing to ongoing local research.

Also on the August 17 bill at the Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy are IV League, Swim Team, department., pting, The Overheads and el tee.

Jarrow just dropped the video for new single Season, directed by Max Woods, about an outsider’s perspective on US gun culture.


VALE

* John Newhill began photographing musicians from 1967, getting an early start with Go-Set magazine and also featured in the book on Australia’s psychedelic era, Tomorrow is Today.

He was also a piano tuner and dental equipment technician, and well known in Melbourne for his archives of classic rock photos as well as his memorabilia collection of theatre items.

Newhill died of a heart attack at the age of 67, and was also a member of the Australian Road Crew Association.

* Jeremy Collins was a lighting designer and production manager for 40 years in Australia and his native New Zealand, where he was also a founding member of NZ’s first technician’s industry association.

He set up Selecon Lighting in 1985 with Andrew Nichols and was its longtime managing director, during which time he built it up to a global company with a reputation for innovation, and with a huge presence in Australian theatres and museums.

In 2009, he received the Entertainment Technology New Zealand Lifetime Achievement Award, retiring two years later.

Collins died after a long battle with cancer.

P!nk’s video for new single Secrets was shot in Perth and Northbridge when she kicked off her current tour. In the vid, which she directed, she is seen chilling backstage after her fourth show at Perth Arena and dancing around the streets of the Northbridge entertainment strip on a Saturday night with her six dancers.

The social media barbs between Katie Noonan and Sheppard has spilled over into the Brisbane Courier Mail and Hit105.

Sheppard manager Michael Chugg told the newspaper, “They’re off to America, they’ve just had a No.1 album, they don’t need this.” He added, “My advice to [Noonan] is to move on and focus on her own career, as the only one being affected by the rants and lies is her.”

Noonan who’s since deleted the Instagram post explained, “I am disappointed that in my insomnia’s lonely hours I lowered myself.”

The feud began when Nooan ticked off Sheppard for not showing at the 2016 Queensland music awards, unaware that at the time they were on holidays to sort out inter-band issues. The band was enraged when asked to perform at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony for $6000, which they considered pitifully low.

When Noonan’s opening sequence got flayed, George Sheppard hooted on social media, “Ain’t karma a bitch!”
