Heatseeker: Goldroom
Unless you listen to Alternative radio you might not be familiar with Goldroom. Let us fill you in. Its 2013, disco has undergone a resurrection thanks to two French robots releasing an album that turned back the clocks and ushered in a new precedent for modern dance music (a sentence that would only amuse those who don’t know Daft Punk). Lead single Get Lucky harked back to the time of Chic and Sister Sledge – thanks to collaborator Nile Rogers – and spent weeks atop global charts and sent disco groovin’ again.
Flash forward and the aftermath is plain to see, not only is their influence ever-present, it’s allowed people already pushing that sound (re: Flight Facilities, Classixx, Disclosure, Georgio Moroder, Nile Rogers’ slew of recent collaborations) to rise through the ranks at speeds not possible before said revival. Enter laptop producer Josh Legg from LA, better known as Goldroom. He’s been busy touring the US and the world with his new band, consisting of vocalist Mereki Beach (destined for fame with a name like that) and drummer Nick Sandler. It was never going to be long until their synth-laden sounds impacted our shores, and last week they did in superb fashion. Legg cracked our biggest Alt platform Triple J and rose to #1 on the Alternative chart with his current washed-out disco tune, Embrace.
Not only that, but the track is #21 on Shazam’s top tagged chart and entered our Hot100 this week at #97, thanks to afternoon plays on major stations like SAFM, 92.9 Perth and B105.
Embrace has amassed close to 600,000 plays on Soundcloud, with over 52,000 followers and their Facebook page has over 68,000 likes. I’m sure you’ll be hearing from them soon. Keep your ears peeled.
