GYROstream Launches GYROrecords (EXCLUSIVE)

GYROstream is entering the label business, TMN can exclusively reveal.

The Australian distribution specialist today (May 9) launches GYROrecords, an independent label that should benefit from GYROstream’s distribution, A&R, GYROdigital and GYROpr know-how.

The first signing is Brisbane artist Yb., whose new single “Change Your Mind” has enjoyed support on triple j’s Home & Hosed and Unearthed, and scored front-page real estate on Spotify’s “come thru” breaking artist spotlight and on New Music Friday AU/NZ, The Local List and Indie Arrivals.

Yb., like all future signings to the new label, was identified as an artist the GYROrecords team is “passionate about,” explains GYROstream co-founder and GYROrecords label manager Viv Mellish.

All the machinery of GYROrecords and its affiliates will work in harmony on each project to give “everything they’ve got,” adds Mellish.

“We’ve been offering flexible add-on label services to GYROstream distributed artists since we started in 2018,” Mellish explains, “and to bring the entire team together through GYROrecords to cohesively rally around artists we care deeply about is an exciting new way of working for our team.”

Signing Yb., Meanjin-based with two nominations at the 2022 Queensland Music Awards, including the emerging artist category, was a no-brainer, notes GYROstream A&R and streaming partnerships manager Benjamin James.

“Yb. is a brilliant artist with a pure soul that has created a powerful EP,” he comments.

“It’s incredibly satisfying to be able to enter into a partnership that reflects both our core values as a business and his as an artist.”

Yb. recently supported San Cisco on tour, and he opened the inaugural March 5 This That festival at Sandstone Point at Bribie Island, north of Brisbane.

He’s booked by UndrCTRL, he’s amassed more than 46,000 followers on Spotify, and his catalog has notched more than 4 million combined streams, says reps for GYROrecords.

“Yb. is one of the most exciting young acts in the country – he’s a whip smart creative with a huge vision,” says Yb co-manager Julian Hewitt. “We’re all excited to deepen the relationship with GYROstream who’ve been a big early supporter.”

The silky-smooth “Change Your Mind” is just a starting point, explains Yb.

“Some of these songs have been sitting in storage for about a year now, so it’s beyond exciting to show everyone what I’ve been working on.”

Founded in the Queensland capital in 2018, GYROstream now represents thousands of artists across Australia and New Zealand for artist services and global digital distribution, and delivers to upwards of 100 digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple, TikTok, Amazon and YouTube.

The company now has offices in Sydney and Melbourne and last year launched Find My ISRC, a tool to assist DIY artists, managers and labels to keep track of their recordings as they travel the web.

GYROstream also took out The Music Network’s Tinnie for Music Distributor of the Year in 2021.
