EMI Music announces electronic duo Choomba as latest signing
Tasmanian tech-house duo Choomba has officially signed with EMI Music Australia.
Formed by cousins Christian and Tim Benson, Choomba rose to prominence in 2019 when their debut EP Choomdoomskins charted across electronic music platform Beatport, with subsequent singles ‘Lah Luh’ and ‘Say It’ achieving high rotation across triple j and community dance radio.
The duo is also set to take over Friday nights on triple j, with their new program The Nudge replacing Vance Musgrove’s Friday Night Shuffle.
Mark Holland, general manager of A&R at EMI Music, celebrated Choomba as one of Australia’s best up-and-coming electronic acts and said he was looking forward to releasing new music from the duo.
“We feel lucky having Choomba joining the EMI roster and trusting us with the next steps,” Holland said.
“They’re poised to become the next elite electronic act hailing from Australia with global ambition alongside their sharp managerial confidant, Gabe Bravo from Cloak Entertainment. Can’t wait to get these tunes out in the wild.”
Choomba admitted that they never expected to reach so many people with the musical project.
“We’re so stoked to be working with the legends at EMI, it’s still crazy to us that people are taking a couple of cousins from Tassie semi-seriously,” the duo said.
“We started this to have a bit of fun to play some different tunes in little clubs and now we’re getting played on radio and getting booked for these massive festivals.
“Feels pretty surreal because we haven’t really properly got to experience it with all the COVID restrictions, but we’re just happy to now have a team around us to help step the project up.”
