Drake leads local & international Spotify playlist charts
Drake has been crowned 2016’s most streamed artist on Spotify, according to Spotify’s Year In Music report, while for the second year in a row, Sia is the top streamed Australian artist around the world.
One Dance (feat. WizKid and Kyla), Drake’s chart-topping hit, is also the world’s most streamed track in 2016. Not only was One Dance Australia’s top streamed track of 2016, the track is now the world’s most streamed Spotify track of all time with 970 million streams, surpassing Lean On by Major Lazer (ft. MØ and DJ Snake).
Drake’s name is found in almost every eligible category in Australia including the most streamed artist in Australia which was formerly retained for the previous two years by Ed Sheeran.
The Canadian’s impressive run continues with latest album Views becoming the most streamed album in Australia and globally, amassing over 2.45 billion streams on Spotify worldwide after it’s release in April.
The results are almost identical in the UK. Drake is the region’s most streamed artist of 2016 while also achieving the most streamed track and the most streamed album of the last year with One Dance and Views.
“Drake has been unstoppable this year – he’s a true global superstar,” said Stefan Blom, Spotify’s Chief Content & Chief Strategy Officer.
Building on last year’s accomplishments, Sia is again Australia’s most streamed artist globally. Her single Cheap Thrills is also the fifth most streamed track in 2016. Sia sits in third place behind Rhianna and Ariana Grande among Spotify’s top streamed female artists in Australia.
Flume’s Never Be Like You is 2016’s second most streamed track in Australia, while the Sydney native also topped the list of streams in Australia for domestic artists, capping of a successful year for the 25-year-old who took home six ARIA Awards last week.
Friday November 11 was Spotify’s busiest day of the year, racking up more streams than any other day on the calendar. The emerging genres category indicates that Ambient Fusion is the most streamed up-and-coming genre with Witch House coming in a close second.
