Drake: All Me
With Australian radio finally taking notice of Drake due to the undeniable nature of his track Hold On, We’re Coming Home, attention will no doubt soon turn to the numerous other possible singles from Nothing Was The Same. We (as a nation, not us at TMN, mind!) may have slept on February’s lead single, the minimalist origin-story Started From The Bottom, but with All Me being released to urban stations in the US just three weeks ago, this makes sense as the next Australian single.
This self-congratulatory jam sees Drake joined by 2 Chainz and Big Sean, who each at turns celebrate and bemoan their self-made status. The measured, crystalline backing track only enforces the inherent loneliness at the heart of this song – and indeed at most of Drake’s output – and while All Me isn’t as honkingly obvious as Hold On, a 2013 audience attuned to James Blake, The Weeknd and The XX should lap this up. Drake claims on this song that his “latest shit is like a greatest hits”, and we’re inclined to agree.
