Revealed: 5SOS & Vance Joy a hit with Aussie Spotify users

As 2018 draws to a close, Spotify is issuing data on what made Australian – and global – music fans rate on the click-o-meter.

2018 saw Aussies love of country music skyrocket them to third place, just behind the US and Canada.

2018 is arguably the year of urban music, with rap and hip hop taking out top honours on Spotify’s 2018 top lists.

Drake has taken out the global treble for the most-streamed artist, most-streamed album, and most-streamed track.

With 8.2 billion streams in 2018 alone, the Canadian rapper is now Spotify’s most-streamed artist of all time.

Five Seconds of Summer saw ‘Youngblood’ take out #2 spot, after Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’.

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dream’ was the most most streamed song for 55+ year olds.

The three most popular playlists for Aussies were Hot Hits Australia, Today’s Top Hits and Morning Motivation.

Tasmanians have bucked the Drake trend to crown ‘Youngblood’ their number one streamed track ahead of Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’, which reigned supreme in every other state and territory.

Globally, our top five Aussies are an eclectic mix of pop, rock, and showtunes; Sia, 5SOS, AC/DC, Troye Sivan, and Hugh Jackman, proving popular with Spotify’s global audience.

“Unsurprisingly, rap and hip-hop have dominated the top lists in 2018,” says Alicia Sbrugnera, head of shows & editorial AUNZ.
