Dew Process/Universal Music Australia this morning announced they have signed Brisbane five-piece WAAX.

The deal covers Australia and New Zealand.

A new single ‘Labrador’ will be followed by national dates where they will preview new material.

Fronted by Marie DeVita, WAAX’s approach from the start was focussed on the live show.

“We just wanted our shows to be exciting and intense; and that was naturally manifested in our recordings,” the band said.

“Our songs are like a harsh aural reality-check with an unexpected nurturing side – kind of like a tough mother-figure filtered through a shitload of fuzz.”

Their first EP Holy Sick in 2014 quickly gained them a following for its bass-heavy melodic punk elements.

Last year’s Wild & Weak EP widened their following even more, tapping on more modern and angular post-punk influences as Kurt Vile, and lyrically DeVita using each track to convey the emotions she went through due to a personal relationship breaking down and with changes within the band.

WAAX became festival favourites, with slots at Falls, The Plot, Yours & Owls,, Secret Garden and most recently, The Smith Street Band’s Pool House Party.

In April, they support Scottish power trio Biffy Clyro on their Australian East Coast run.

Thursday May 31: Ed Castle, Adelaide

Friday June 1, The Sewing Room, Perth

Saturday June 2: The Odd Fellow, Fremantle

Friday June 8: Rad, Wollongong

WAAX will not be performing but will be attending “for all the hangz and the beerz”.
