Daft Punk causes huge upswing in French record sales

Parisian electro-enigmas Daft Punk have been credited with boosting overall record sales in France, prompting the industry’s first positive results in a decade.

The 6.1% rise of overall record sales in the first half of 2013, compared to the same period in 2012, has been largely attributed to the helmet-clad duo’s hugely successful album Random Access Memories.

This amounts to a turnover of €217.8 million (US $219 million), factoring in CD sales, as well as revenue accrued from downloading and streaming.

The album broke sales records across the globe and just recently Amazon announced that Random Access Memories had become its best-selling vinyl LP of all time.

French music industry union, the Syndicat National de L’Édition Phonographique, cautiously accredited the Daft Punk record as a driving force behind the French public’s return to buying homegrown records.

Nine of the top ten selling albums in the period were French.
