Music industry event for women & non-binary people returns after COVID delays

The Courage Collective, a new music industry event which aims to offer a safe, diverse and inclusive space for women and non-binary people while celebrating their contribution to the arts, has announced its return.

The initiative had been due to take place in August last year, however like many other events, it fell victim to COVID restrictions and lockdowns.

It will now take place at The Zoo in Meanjin/ Brisbane on April 24.

It will feature an industry panel, live art and performances to raise awareness and create conversations around the collective struggles minorities face in the creative field. The event will aim to “create a home and sense of belonging for people that have been lost amongst the male-dominated creative scene”.

B.B.T.K, Cheap Date, Jessa, MoZza and The Dandys will perform.

Music industry organisation Support Act will also provide mental health services on the night.

The event was created by 97 Joyride Agency’s founder Zoe Maras, and artist and educator JESA (both pictured above).

It will have a zero-tolerance approach to any forms if intimidation and harassment, organisers said, imploring people to “leave any bigotry at home”.

Maras said it was great to be back on track with the event.

“Jess and I are thrilled to say that The Courage Collective is back after two postponements and we are looking forward to seeing the event come to life finally,” she said.

“The support which we have gotten from people has been so amazing and is further proof that events like ours that focus on community must exist to enable the change our industries need.”

JESA added: “After two years of isolation and restrictions, we can’t think of a more important time to bring everyone together again to celebrate and honour the beautiful diversity in the arts, and feel seen, heard and acknowledged.”

Proceeds from ticket sales will be delivered back to the creatives involved, with a portion donated to Boots For One And All as well as Zig Zag.

Tickets can be purchased here.
