Cookin’ On Three Burners track creates waves in US
After its phenomenal success in the UK and Europe last year, the Kungs remix of Melbourne band Cookin’ On Three Burners’ This Girl is now creating waves in the United States.
Earlier this week, the track was used during the Super Bowl in a commercial by Atlanta, Georgia-based prepaid mobile phone service Cricket Wireless.
The AT&T-owned company used the ad (renaming the song Dance Dance) to inform customers it had superior 4G LTE coverage than some of the major carriers, and that customers would be eligible for a free 4G LTE smartphone if they switched carriers.
The commercial is due to air over a twelve month period in North America.
Additionally. an informed source tells TMN that This Girl is also to be used as the theme song for a soon-to-be-announced American TV show.
The song has previously been used by brands in other territories including Italy, France and South Africa.
The soul trio formed in 1997 and released This Girl in 2009 with guest vocalist Kylie Auldist. Last year, French teen producer Kungs, aka Valentin Brunel, did the remix. It was issued by Universal Music credited to Kungs Vs Cookin On 3 Burners.
The track went to #1 in France, Germany and ten other territories. In the UK, it stayed at #2 for five weeks, unable to displace Drake from top spot.
It was also the most Shazamed dance song for the year and has been streamed close to half a billion times thus far. The video has clicked over 190,000 million views.
Such was its profile that it put the Greek island of Milos on the tourist map. The video was shot on the volcanic island, highlighting its 80 white secluded beaches, calm waters, whitewashed fishing villages, sandstone cliffs, Roman ruins and caves that were used by Saracen pirates.
Milos was previously considered out of the way for holidaymakers, being an eight-hour ferry trip from Athens, or a five-hour trip from Santorini. But tourist agencies have recently been bombarded with booking requests from European customers showing interest in a trip to the Greek island.
It was soon featured on a number of tourism magazines as “a place to see the real Greece at a fraction of the price”.
This Girl has also caught on at soccer matches through Europe and the UK. Supporters of the Everton Football Club in England have adopted it as the personal chant song to celebrate new signing Morgan Schneiderlin’s arrival from Manchester United.
