Case Study: Aussie Iggy Azalea’s chart domination

Mullumbimby-born hip hop artist Iggy Azalea looks set to land the #1 album on the ARIA Chart this Saturday, as well as landing two singles inside the Top 10.

Iggy Azalea’s debut album The New Classic debuted at #3 on this week’s US Billboard 200 in a competitive week, behind the monolithic Frozen soundtrack, which has sat at pole position for 12 weeks, and fellow rapper Future’s second album Honest. Azalea’s album reached the highest position in the US by a female rapper since Nicki Minaj’s 2012 set Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded debuted at #1. The New Classic also debuted at #5 on the UK chart.

In Australia, the record looks set to debut at #1, with UK group The Vamps’ debut the only possible contender to the throne. On the Singles chart, Iggy’s Fancy – which moved from #23 to #17 last week, looks set to jump into the Top 10. Azalea also features on Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande’s brassy, brash single Problem, which has consistently sat at #1 on the iTunes chart since being released on Tuesday, and could compete with Ed Sheeran’s Sing for this week’s #1 if strong singles continue. The track has hit the top spot on the iTunes charts in over 40 countries over the past few days.

Azalea is also currently sitting at #1 and #2 on the US iTunes Singles chart, with Fancy at #2 being held out by Problem – not exactly a tough problem to have.
