Broods win four at Vodafone NZ Music Awards
Last year’s Breakthrough Artists, Broods, capped off a successful year of international recognition by taking home no less than four wins at last night’s 50th Vodafone NZ Music Awards in Auckland.
Caleb and Georgia Nott took the “tuis” for Best Group, up against 15 x winners Shihad and Six60. Their debut album Evergreen was named Album of the Year and Best Pop Album, and Mother & Father was Radio Airplay Record of the Year. The single went gold after peaking at #12, and also spilled over to chart success in Australia (#54) and the United States (a #36 peak on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart).
The pair dutifully thanked their producer and songwriting collaborator Joel Little (“the invisible third member of Broods … he’s our brother”), manager Ashley Page, radio (“every radio station has been awesome to us”) and their parents for teaching them how to play guitar.
They performed Mother & Father to the star-studded audience, which included a surprise appearance from Mick Fleetwood who’s playing two cities with Fleetwood Mac, and a loudly cheered Lorde who returned from recording in New York and posed for selfies with fans on the red carpet.
Current Melbourne resident Marlon Williams, who won two from five nominations, also performed a stripped back version of Dark Child. Clutching on to one of his awards, he quipped, “It looks so cool and I will never give it away.”
Neil Finn inducted the Exponents (who lived in Australia for a time) into the Hall of Fame, while Dave Dobbyn and Tami Neilson paid musical tribute with Does Love Do This To Me?.
Various artists and presenters also paid tributes to rugby union champion Jonah Lomu, who died days before at 40, and had also released an album.
