Bieber, 5SOS among winners at MTV EMAs
Taylor Swift may have taken out the coveted Best Song MTV EMA last night in Milan but it was Justin Bieber who dominated the Awards, taking out five trophies.
Bieber, who performed his first ever Australian #1 single What Do You Mean?, took out the Europe Music Awards for Best Male; Best Look; Worldwide Act: North America; Best Collaboration (for Where Are You Now? with Skrillex and Diplo); and the Biggest Fans prize. The social media vote for Biggest Fans surprisingly saw One Direction place second.
Australia’s 5 Seconds of Summer took out the EMA for Worldwide Act: Australia / New Zealand. Ed Sheeran, who co-hosted the awards with ex-Australian MTV VJ Ruby Rose, took home awards for Best Live Act and Best World Stage (which Australian rapperIggy Azalea was also nominated for).
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis opened the show with their long-running ARIA #1 single Downtown. The Platinum-selling track also took out the award for Best Video, beating out Adelaide-born artist Sia and her clip foe Elastic Heart.
Coldplay took out the EMA for Best Rock Act, beating outFoo Fighters,Muse,Royal Bloodand Australia’s own AC/DC.
MTV aired the red carpet pre-show and using the show to test new technology, MTV’s parent company Viacom aired the ceremony via a virtual reality live stream. The MTV EMA app allowed international viewers, including those tuned in in China, France, Spain, Italy, Russia and Brazil, access to the awards ceremony.
The network also debuted MTV Canvas, a new tool found on MTVbump.com that gives the audience tools to play with pop culture and create and submit spots to possibly run on-air on MTV’s network of international channels in 160+ countries.
