Beyoncé scores fastest-selling iTunes album ever

Beyonce’s surprise self-titled album has been setting sales records since its release on Friday afternoon (AEST), and now iTunes and Columbia Records report it has officially become the fastest-selling album ever worldwide through the iTunes Store.

According to Billboard, the album had sold 828,773 copies in its first three days, ensuring the record a #1 debut. Beyoncé also broke the U.S. iTunes record for the largest sales-week, with 617,000 sales – despite only being available for three days of that week. This beats Taylor Swift’s previous record: Red sold 465,000 copies last October during its first week, although coupled with physical sales, Red sold 1.2m copies total during the week.

In addition, the record is the first to top the iTunes Albums charts of more than 100 countries – 104 was the last count, a figure that is likely to have shifted by the time you read this.

All in all, it’s an impressive first week, and with physical copies of the album available this Friday, we can expect strong sales throughout the rest of the holiday season.
