Baker Boy, Amyl and the Sniffers Win Big at 2022 ARIA Awards (FULL LIST)

Baker Boy and Amyl and the Sniffers filled their boots at the 2022 ARIA Awards, held in Sydney on Thursday night as an in-person party for the first time since 2019.

Baker Boy, aka Danzal Baker, the one-time young Australian of the year, was the undisputed hero of the night with five pointed trophies, including album of the year (for Gela), best hip-hop/rap release and best solo artist.

“Oh my god. Oh my heart,” he remarked after winning album of the year, before reading a prepared acceptance speech in his native tongue.

Amy Taylor and Co. confirmed what most of us already knew: they’re one of the best bands on the planet. On Thursday night at Hordern Pavilion, the rockers won for best group and best rock album, for Comfort To Me.

“How good is this,” Taylor enthused after Amyl and the Sniffers won best group. “Know there’s a couple of drinking games going on” back home.”

With their brace of ARIAs, Amyl and the Sniffers’ collection grows to three, following the punk rockers’ win for best rock album in 2019.

The Wiggles’ remarkable year continues, with the children’s entertainment legends winning two honours, best children’s album and best Australian live act.

Meanwhile, King Stingray, the smoking hot indie rock outfit from Northeast Arnhem Land, becomes just the second winner of the Michael Gudinski breakthrough artist, named after the legendary late Mushroom Group founder.

The previous breakthrough winner, Budjerah, returned to the winners circle with the best soul/R&B award for “Conversations.”

Other winners on the night included electronic trio Rüfüs Du Sol (producer – best produced album); Tones And I (for the publicly-voted song of the year for “Cloudy Day”), The Kid LAROI (best pop release (“Thousand Miles”); Casey Barnes (best country album for Light It Up); Queensland punk rock trio The Chats (best hard rock/heavy metal album for Get Fucked), and DJ/producer Luude (best dance/electronic release for “Down Under”)

Harry Styles made the ARIAs Harry’s House for a moment, as the British pop star won most popular international artist, a fan-voted category.

As previously reported, Natalie Imbruglia hosted alongside songwriter and drummer G Flip and pop favourite Ruel.

For the second consecutive year, the ARIA Hall of Fame didn’t take any new inductees. Instead, the ceremony took time to remember the work of three Hall of Famers who died in recent months, The Seekers’ Judith Durham, Archie Roach and Olivia Newton-John.

ONJ was saluted with a medley of fan-faves, “Hopelessly Devoted To You,” “Xanadu” and “You’re The One That I Want,” featuring Imbruglia, Kye, Peking Duk and Tones And I, who served as musical director of the tribute.

Also, Budjerah, Jessica Mauboy and Thelma Plum remembered Roach with his ARIA Award-nominated number, “One Song,” while Casey Donovan and Dami Im each performed a solo salute to Durham, with “I’ll Never Find Another You” and “The Carnival Is Over.”

The ARIAs telecast kicked off from 7:30pm on Channel 9, 9Now and streamed internationally on YouTube.

“Huge congratulations to all the winners from across Australia, in particular Baker Boy, whose success with five ARIAs this year is absolutely inspiring,” comments ARIA CEO, Annabelle Herd. “No one can deny that the talent, energy, and world-class creativity we have in Australian music deserves to be celebrated.”

Heading into 2023, she continues, “the future of Aussie music is looking very bright.”
