APRA AMCOS examines Spotify prices

Is Australia an expensive market for digital music streaming? A new whitepaper from APRA AMCOS examines Spotify prices in 35 markets, with the organisation’s principal analyst Andrew Harris explaining:  “Over the last year, streaming revenues have shown a similar growth trajectory to that of the early days of downloads in Australia. It is shaping up as the next big format for digital music consumption.”

It found that Australian consumers have one of the world’s most affordable digital music streaming offerings. The analysis found that overall, the analysis found that Australia’s digital music streaming pricing sits slightly below average in current US dollar terms but near the bottom of the range globally in terms of household income and mobile spending.

Harris pointed out, “Our price sits below streaming leaders Sweden, Norway and Denmark, along with the larger music markets of Germany, UK and France.”  He added that “if sales tax is stripped out of our price it is almost on par with the US.”

The report explains: “Although Australia’s price is around 12% higher than that in the US, it is below most developed European and Scandinavian countries. Other than the US, it is also the lowest price seen in the world’s top ten recorded music markets, sitting 30% lower than the UK and 16% lower than Germany and France.”

Interesting results, especially considering the perception that Australians generally pay more for music than the rest of the world.
