AIR launches survey to monitor indies’ market share

The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) has again appointed Deloitte Access Economics to conduct its second Australian Independent Music Market Survey.

The first one, in 2017, was an eye-opener, revealing the independent market accounted for 30% of the total Australian music market (or $155 million in 2014-15).

AIR general manager, Maria Amato: says, “Results from this survey will be used to help inform the public, music industry, and government audiences of the contribution and size of independent music in Australia.

“In addition, this information could be used as supporting evidence to encourage discussions and inform conversations regarding royalty and income distribution.”

All independent record labels and distributors are invited to take part in the survey, until Tuesday, October 1.

Other findings from the first survey were:

44% of independent sector revenue comes from digital channels

More than half (57%) of independent sector revenue is attributable to Australian artists

95% of independent sector music releases are new content.
