Adele albums pass 14 million sales mark in US
Adele’s album sales have topped the 14 million mark in the United States after shifting a combined 3,000 there in one week last month.
According to Nielsen figures, the British singer’s two albums 19 and 21 continue to sell. 21, which was released in America in February 2011 and topped the charts, has sold 11.17 million Stateside. It hit the 11 million mark this time last year (and sold 30 million worldwide) and continues to sell.
In the week ending August 27, 21 sold a further 2,000 copies in the US and is at #132 after 236 weeks in the charts. It is the 10th biggest selling-album in the US since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.
In the meantime 19, which peaked at #4 in the US after its January 2008 release, sold 7 million worldwide last year. It moved a further 1,000 US copies in the final week of last month.
With such record sales, it’s little wonder that it was reported she was offered $1,638,000 per night to play a Las Vegas residency. She’s also been guaranteed $120 million for a concert tour. With her third album due in November, promoters figure they can easily sell tickets starting at $200.
But Adele apparently has no plans to tour, with reports she prefers to stay at home in England and look after her two-year old son Angelo. Another reason for her refusal is that four years ago she needed vocal chord surgery to remove a benign polyp. Doctors have warned her not to strain her voice. Since the operation, she has only performed live once, in 2013, when she sang Skyfall from the Bond movie at the Oscars.
But after earning $7.5 million last year and remaining Britain’s richest musician under the age of 30 for a fourth year – and bringing her personal fortune to $70 million – money’s no temptation. She’s also rejected offers of endorsement and expanding her income stream as her contemporaries do. She told Vogue, “I have absolutely no intention of going into acting or making perfumes.”
