CRA Reveals Best Music Director Nominees for Upcoming ACRAs

CRA has released the nominees for this year’s Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs).

As part of the awards program, eight people are in the running for two awards in the Best Music Director category – four for ‘non-metro’ and four for ‘metro’.

In the metro category, it’s two iHeartRadio staffers up against one each from Kiis 106.5 and Nova – putting ARN’s total at three.

Leanne ‘Stampsy’ Stamps has been a music director and programmer at ARN’s iHeartRadio since early last year.

In the Best Music Director (Metro) category, she is up against colleague Shannon Fong, the music and operations manager for iHeartRadio.

Fellow ARN staffer Brad McNicol is up for his role as Kiis 106.5’s music director.

The non-ARN outlier in the category is Scott Baker-Smith, who is the Nova Network’s head of music.

Whilst Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) didn’t garner any nominations for Best Music Director in the metro unit, it dominated in non-metro.

Up for the award is Trent Towson, music director for Hit’s 90.9 SeaFM on the Gold Coast.

His Triple M contemporary, Andrew Very from 92.5, is up for the same award.

Also vying for the non-metro prize is Gemma Maddox for Club Lime Radio, a joint venture between ARN and SCA run out of Canberra. Maddox made the TMN 30 Under 30 list this year and also took out the Readers’ Choice Award.

The final person in the running for the non-metro prize is Shayne Sinclair, program director for Nova Entertainment’s Star 104.5 on the Central Coast.

The Best Music Presenter category will also see some stiff competition, with Tim Blackwell (Nova Network), Mitch Churi (Kiis Network), Christian O’Connell (Gold 104.3) and Dave Williams (Triple M Melbourne) all in the running for the metro prize.

In the Provincial markets, Nic Kelly (Hit 101.3), Nat Penfold (The Edge 96.1), Bella Frizza (90.9 SeaFM), Rod Maldon (Triple M 102.9) and Al Dobie (Triple M 92.5) are competing.

The Best Digital Radio Format will be a battle between SCA/ARN’s Club Lime Radio, ARN’s TikTok Trending on iHeartRadio, and SCA’s RnB Fridays Radio and Dance Hits.

The 33rd annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) will take place on Oct. 29 in Sydney, after a tumultuous few years not helped by lockdowns and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last event to go ahead was the 2019 ACRAs in Brisbane.

The 2020 event was canned due to uncertainty around interstate travel and the COVID-19 situation.

The ACRAs promised to be back bigger and better in 2021, however by August of that year, the viability of that promise was being reviewed.

By September, CRA had decided to call off the event for the year, instead pushing it to February, 2022.

The event was then rebranded as the 2020/21 ACRAs to reflect the larger scope of the work being recognised.

The finalists for the 2020/21 event were released in late October, but not long after, the event was scrapped again.

The winners for the 20/21 ACRAs were instead released online.

The 2022 event, however, is set to go ahead, and new CEO Ford Ennals said the nominees highlight Australia’s vibrant radio and audio industry, recognising outstanding talent across 39 categories including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment.

Radio is thriving thanks to the efforts and creativity of staff on air and off who strive to provide listeners with the best in audio entertainment and information.”
