ABC and Triple J launch Double J

Triple j and the ABC have announced that digital station Dig Music will be renamed Double J and re-launched on Wednesday 30 April.

The station will also introduce regular presenters with music aficionado and former Spicks and Specks team captain Myf Warhurst taking the reins of the first day-to-day show from 11am-3pm. Myf’s program will be music-driven, focusing on new releases, talking to musicians and dipping into the triple j library of artist interviews and live music recordings.

With a focus on new music, Double J’s playlist will also include music from decades previous, billed by the ABC as “music you grew up with.” The changes come after a six-month consultation with listeners.

Double J Content Director Meagan Loader told TMN, “The music you’re hearing now on the station is a good indication of the direction we’re taking. The playlist is updated each week with the best new music from Australia and overseas, including incredible music we find on triple j Unearthed. Recent albums the network has championed include Teeth & Tongue, sun kil moon, Ernest Ellis, Kate Miller-Heidke, St Vincent, Mogwai and Elbow.”

Speaking to TMN Myf Warhurst said, “It’s great to be returning to ABC radio. Over the years I’ve worked at triple j and Local Radio, so working at Dig – which is essentially a bridge between these two audiences – was too good to pass up. I’m talking to people who are my age and really into music too. It’s a match made in heaven.”

The move brings triple j full circle somewhat, with the original AM-band station being named Double J (or 2JJ) from its launch in 1975 until the move across to the FM band in late 1980, and the subsequent name change.

From Wednesday 30 April Double J will be made available on mobile via the ABC Radio App, online at www.doublej.net.au or digital radio/TV.
