triple j gets global kudos for support of indie music

triple j fared well in a global analysis of publicly-funded radio networks and their support of music issued through independent labels.

According to data from RadioMonitor, and analysed by the UK’s Music Business Worldwide, 38% of its Top 50 most played tracks last year were from indies.

In comparison, only 6% of the UK’s BBC Radio 1’s Top 100 were from independent labels (not a good show considering indie albums make up 26% of the market, pointed out MBW). BBC2 only had 15 indie tracks in its Top 100, 32% of XFM’s Top 50 (XFM is very similar to triple j) were indie. BBC 6Music though, went up to 54% in its Top 50.

France’s seven-station youth public radio network Le Mouv, which reaches 13.3 million, had 30% non-major label tracks in its Top 100. Germany’s Radio Kultur’s Top 50 had a 48% indie love-in through 2014.
