Spotify and Shazam choose Grammy winners, while the Grammys choose Rdio

The past week has been rife with lists from various digital services attempting to predict the winners of the Grammy Awards using their not-insignificant data sets. However it seems the real winners are Rdio, who the Grammys have tapped to  power their official iPhone app.

The Grammy have used Rdio’s application programming interface (API), for their app, creating a series of themed playlists, which range from historical to current. We have embedded a handful of our favourites below.

“The GRAMMYs iPhone app illustrates the power of Rdio’s API,” Rdio CEO (US) Anthony Bay said. “We are excited to help the music industry’s premier award show experience get even better, and we hope everyone will check out the official playlists on Rdio as well as this cool, new app.”

Locally, Rdio has recently driven similar partnerships with the ARIA Awards, and the Big Day Out: exclusive content and performances from this weekend’s Sydney BDO will be online from January 27 at onrdio.com. This is coupled with a competition in which entrants can score flights to the final Big Day Out in Perth, accommodation, and VIP access – as well as a meet and greet with Snoop Dogg (or Lion).

Rdio’s Australian office have been quite forward-thinking with these team-ups, and we wouldn’t be surprised if America has taken cues from Australia with this Grammys app. Colin Blake told TMN around the time of the ARIAs activation that “in the US and Canada, we haven’t done anything this extensive around one of these awards ceremonies. Hopefully, the success of this will create a precedent of how it could be used in other territories.”

It would appear that the fever is catching.
