One Direction sell close to 300,000 tickets in Australia
While One Direction play their final Australian date tonight in Melbourne (Wed Oct 30), co-promoters Nine Live and Sony Music revealed that the British act sold close to 300,000 tickets in Australia and NZ, over 28 sold-out dates in a six-week period. The band members were presented with commemorative Australian designed skateboards. Sony also gave them awards for sales of 2.6 million units in Australia – 4 x Platinum for Up All Night, 3 x Platinum for Take Me Home and 9 x Platinum for Up All Night – The Live Tour DVD. One Direction leave the country with their single Story Of My Life sitting at #1 on the iTunes chart.
One Direction also overtook Metallica for highest ticket sales at Sydney’s Allphones Arena. They shifted 81,542 tickets to their seven Sydney shows, beating Metallica’s 74,244 sales over four shows in 2010. Allphones Arena presented each of the five with a gold microphone and set up the first ‘Entertainer’s Star’ plaque in the Olympic Park precinct to mark the milestone.
