Venues update: The Clovelly back on market, The Corner calls bingo, and five more

The Clovelly Hotel in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is back on the market, 18 months after Solotel took over from Iris Capital for a reported $30 million.

The beachside venue books live music on the weekends.

Solotel founder and director Bruce Solomon said the move was part of the company’s constant review of its portfolio.

In the last few years, he explained, “We have opened six new venues, have sold three other properties and undertaken major renovations of another five venues during this period of refocus.”

Over the next month Solotel will open two more venues, The Abercrombie and Chophouse Parramatta.

Justin Hemmes who had bid for The Clovelly in 2016 has indicated he might have another look at it.


The Corner Hotel in Melbourne’s Richmond – one of the city’s best live music venues – is trialling music bingo on Tuesdays.

Host Dan Watt from Beat TV plays snippets of tracks which punters have to match.


NSW-based WEA Hunter Hamilton’s Creative Arts Space auditorium on Beaumont Street is to use its 150-seat theatre and a studio.

Grant Walmsley, Screaming Jets co-founder and Newcastle live music advocate – who recently joined as a teacher for the not-for-profit’s new Diploma of Music Industry program – has also been tutoring in all aspects of the music industry in the space.


Melbourne’s latest nightspot The Albion Rooftop  (172 York St, South Melbourne) launches a Friday night club called White Horse, under Rocksteady Entertainment and Red Heart this week.

The rooftop showcases new and classic house, and the main room R&B and commercial hits.

  • Perth’s Terrace Hotel, a LGBTIQ+ hub, abruptly closed its doors, reportedly due to rent issues.
  • The General Gordon Hotel in Sydenham in Sydney’s inner west, and which features live music, caught on fire yesterday afternoon just as it began renovations. 70 firefighters took two hours to bring it under control, by which time the roof and a major internal wall had collapsed. No one was injured and cause of the fire was still unknown today.
