American Express announces $1 million investment in Australian music industry

American Express has announced the American Express Music Backers Program, a $1 million investment to support Australia’s music industry.

Over the next 12 months it will offer music businesses, artists and fans the chance to access financial support, mentorship or other tools to help them succeed.

The grant will also help to connect music fans with their favourite bands, rewarding them for their support of the live music scene.

Naysla Edwards, vice president of brand and experiences for American Express, said: “Australians love music. In fact, on average, more Australians attend live music gigs each year than sporting events.

“Yet despite this, small music venues, often the training grounds for emerging artists, have witnessed a steady decline in patrons and some have shut down altogether.

“Through The American Express Music Backers Program, we’ll provide a well-needed boost to the music industry and reconnect fans to music experiences that will form lifelong memories.”

The first Music Backers recipient is Sydney venue Selina’s, which has been showcasing acts for 40 years.

It will host a free show by The Killers tomorrow.

Selina’s will use the grant to update its look, with venue owner Chris Cheung hailing the initiative as something that will help to reinvigorate the Sydney live music scene.

Applications open for the grant at www.americanexpress.com.au/musicbackers.

Assessing these are Rachel Stocks, American Express managing director for Australia and New Zealand; Roger Field, CEO of Live Nation Australasia; George Ash, president, Universal Music Asia Pacific; Tim Worton, group director, Arenas; Millie Millgate, executive producer, Sounds Australia; and Nick Yates, general manager of Artist Management at Unified Music Group.

Roger Field said grants would be awarded to those whose passion for music shone through and where the judging panel felt would make the most impact.

“Whether you’re a venue looking for new ways to attract fans and new business, an artist seeking an introduction in the industry, or a die-hard fan who’s after tickets to see their favourite artist, The American Express Music Backers Program is designed for you,” Field said.

“I’m proud to be part of an initiative that will support the industry on a number of levels and it’s great that this will give something back to a scene that so many Australians are passionate about.”

American Express set up 168 years and is in 130 countries, and entered the Australian market 64 years ago.
