Yearly Hot 100 market breakdown: EMI
Sporting a smaller scope of artists than the big-three majors, EMI take the wins of 2017 with one eye on next year as their roster continues to flourish. The Universal-owned label captured 10% of the Hot 40 and just under 9% of the Hot 100, remaining steady year-on-year.
EMI reaped the rewards of adding One Directionartists Niall Horan and Liam Payne to its ranks, with the label bagging a Top 10 single on the year-end chart (Horan’s ‘Slow Hands’) and another in the Top 20 (Payne’s ‘Strip That Down’ ft. Quavo) as a result of signing up the young pop stars.
With EMI heavyweights Katy Perry and Flume (through Future Classic) failing to makea significant impact in 2017,Jonas Blue’s ‘Mama’ ft. William Singe was there to pick up the slack. At #14 on the yearly chart, ‘Mama’ was a staple point on the Hot 100 during July and August, peaking at #5.
Jon Bellion’s ‘All Time Low’ (#52) was a big surprise, markingthe musician’s first ever single to debutise on the Hot 100. Picked up by the Nova network in the later part of 2016, ‘All Time Low’ was quick out of the gate at the start of the year, and had an average position of #29 by the time it dropped off the chart in June.
With the international success stories continuing to unfold in the latter half of 2017 with Sam Smith and NF, EMI’s third and fourth quarters stand tall compared to the previous half. Smith’s ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ sits at #74 on the year-end chart after hitting #1 in October, while Payne’s seven consecutive weeks at #1 with ‘Strip That Down’ occurred in July/August.
