Yearly Hot 100 market breakdown: Sony Music Entertainment

Sony claims the #1 single of 2017 with ‘Something Just Like This’, the collaborative banger between DJ duo The Chainsmokers and Coldplay. Following a debut at #13 in March, the track spent seven weeks in pole position and 11 weeks in the Top 3, remaining an immovable force in the chart ever since.

Then cast your eye just beyond the Top 10 to find the label’s next entry – another hit single courtesy of The Chainsmokers (‘Paris’) at #15. Little Mix comes in at #18 with the group’s multi-Platinum single ‘Touch’, which enjoyed a healthy run at commercial at the start of 2017, followed by Kygo and Selena Gomez’s collab‘It Ain’t Me’ at #23.

Overall, Sony occupies 32% of the Hot 100 and 19% of the Hot 40. The reason for this discrepancy ultimately lies in the release schedule. Remembering that the year-end chart only equates data from the start of the calendar year through to December, this naturally disadvantages singles hitting charts in the later stages of the year.

Camila Cabello’s ‘Havana’ ft. Young Thug, ZAYN’s ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ ft. Sia, Khalid’s ‘Young, Dumb & Broke’, and a pair of commanding singles from P!NK all dropped (or were picked up by radio) between the months of August and October, and were arguably Sony’s strongest pushes at commercial in 2017.

With all these tracks sitting sharply on the latest issue of the Hot 100, Sony will begin the new year with a firm jump over its competitors and a good chance of reclaiming past radio supremacy.
