TMN Tinnies: Music Start-up of the Year nominees

In the lead up to TMN’s first annual TMN Tinnies, we’ll be getting to know each of the nominees more intimately before the final winners are determined on Friday,February 2.

We’ll be taking a look at the finalists across each of the eight categories in the coming days, with Music Start-up of the Year the first category put under the microscope.

Playlist Pump

It’s been an incredible 12 months for Sydney-based startup,Playlist Pump. The extension of creative agencyUpside Music, which acts as a playlist pitching serviceworking with 250 well-known Spotify playlist curators, launched back in December 2016 under the guidance of entrepreneurialco-founders,Adam LuerneandWilson Olegasegarem.

Since then, Playlist Pump has partnered with one ofSpotify’s biggest independent curators, global curation networkListd Music.

GiggedIn

The little engine that could of the Australian music scene, this year saw GiggedIn team upwith Kingdom Sounds for their COSMOS event, headlined by Crooked Coloursand Running Touch.

The event cemented the start-up’s endeavour to deliver original and curated events to music fans, along with their regular run of gig opportunities (which in the past 12 months has included the likes of Remi, Alex Lahey, LDRU, Polish Club, KLP, Dillon Francis, Snakehips, Marshmello, Hayden James and Steve Aoki).

DISCO

An app designed for music makers rather than music consumers,DISCO may not seem as sexy as other startups – but they do aim to solve the industry-wide dilemma of sharing, storing and using music online. With almost 4.4 million tracks now stored on the music management platform, they’ve come a long way since their humble beginnings in Melbourne.

Audience Republic

In an age of increasing ticket prices and a ticket scalping epidemic, Audience Republic is attempting to boost ticket sales through good ol’ fashioned peer-to-peer incentives.

Co-founders Jared Kristensen and Jason MacLulich have designed a platform and service that allows organisers to create campaigns by offering merit-based rewards of various types and levels to fans. The pairrecently raised $525,000 from investors – meaning that 2018 may just be their biggest year yet.

PopGun

There is no denying artificial intelligence (AI)is the new frontier, and the music industry isn’t going to be left behind, thanks to Brisbane startupPopGun. The brainchild of AI engineers Adam Hibble and Stephen Phillips, PopGun is training computers to not only identify songs that will become popular, but to compose and perform the songs as well.

The pair recently won a place on the prestigious TechStars music tech accelerator program, which provided the opportunity to hone its technology and plans, particular around their first project ‘Alice’, an AI that plays the piano with humans.
