Sia, The Kid LAROI Dominate 2023 Spotify Aussie Music Global Impact List

Sia, The Kid LAROI Dominate 2023 Spotify Aussie Music Global Impact List

Sia leads the way on Spotify’s “Australian Music Global Impact List,” a newly-published impression of the top tracks from Aussie acts across the calendar year.

The Adelaide-raised superstar leads the top 30 chart with “Gimme Love,” the first track from her forthcoming 10th album Reasonable Woman, expected to drop later this year.

Unveiled by Spotify Australia, the “Australian Music Global Impact List” is the first account for a full year of streaming, analysing streams on Spotify released between Jan 1 and Dec. 31, 2023.

According to reps for Spotify, the “dominant export force” of 2023 is The Kid LAROI, who lands five entries in the top 30, including three of the top 10.

The Sydney-based 20-year-old singer and rapper is the subject of a new documentary on Prime Video, Kids Are Growing Up: A Story About A Kid Named LAROI, and will take the next step up when he plays stadiums around Australia this October.

Kevin Parker’s psychedelic pop masters Tame Impala, rising Melbourne rapper Lithe, electronic music duo Shouse, and singer-songwriter Clinton Kane make a dent on the top 10, while 2023 ARIA Award winners Troye Sivan and Dom Dolla each scoop three titles in the tally.

“The ‘2023 Spotify Australian Music Global Impact List’ is an excellent snapshot of local artists having an impact on the global stage, and it’s pleasing to see that our first full-year edition contains a mix of established and emerging artists,” comments Spotify Australia head of music Alicia Sbrugnera.

“We’re proud to be playing our part in helping Australia on its journey to becoming a significant exporter of music, as well as helping prove that making it big in international markets is a legitimate path to career growth and success for local artists.”

The Aussie hitmaker report follows the announcement last week that Spotify generated US$9 billion in royalties in 2023, an amount paid for both recorded music and publishing rights, with independents accounting for half that sum (US$4.5 billion).

Spotify now accounts for more than 20% of global recorded music revenue and is by some distance the biggest music subscription platform with 236 million subscribers in the fourth quarter, up 4% over the previous quarter, and 602 million monthly active users, up 5%.

Spotify’s list is generated from global streams of tracks by Australian artists but excludes streaming in Australia.

“Australia has a population of about 25 million, half of them are on Spotify every month,” Spotify AUNZ’s managing director Mikaela Lancaster told The Music Network at SXSW Sydney 2023.
