Aussie TikTok creators can get tips and gifts from early 2022
Australian TikTok creators can get direct tips and video gifts from early 2022.
The new Tips feature allows people to directly show gratitude to creators for their content, with creators receiving 100% of the tip value, the company announced.
However, the fan will incur a small fee when going through Stripe, TikTok’s payment service.
The feature, which it began testing in October, has just been introduced in the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Australia and Canada will go live in the “coming months”, TikTok said.
To be eligible, creators must be aged 18 or older, with 100,000 followers, 1,000 video views in the past 30 days and three posts in that same period.
The Live Gifts feature, which lets users gift Diamonds — a virtual currency redeemable for cash — during livestreams, is being extended for video plays as well through Video Gifts.
TikTok’s huge success in reach and engagement – it reached 1 billion active users in late September, who spend over 850 minutes per month on the app – means creatives with a significant following can generate a lot of dineros.
According to one estimate, a TikToker with one million followers can earn between US$1,000 and $30,000 a month.
SoundCloud and Spotify also recently introduced similar models for fans to tip creators.
