’93-’13: She Will Have Her Way, Neil Finn
Due in part to the fairly ubiquitous tribute album that shares this song’s title, She Will Have Her Way seems to have slipped quietly from Finn’s commonly agreed upon canon of Stone Cold Classics, an impossible situation that must be rectified immediately. Sadly, the track’s main exposure was as the opening track to the otherwise unbearable Felicitysoundtrack, an uplifting introduction that was soon beaten into submission by the one-two punch of Heather Nova and Sarah McLachlan.
Finn’s second solo single couldn’t be further removed from his first – the claustrophobia Sinner – featuring chiming Eastern guitars, serpentine verses and surprising melodic twists – all anchored by a plodding rhythm track. Stylistically, it sits with the 1993 Crowded House album Together Alone, which was heavily informed in places by The Beatles mid-‘60s flirtation with Eastern sounds.
A delightfully clunky video clip featuring footage from schlock horror films Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock aired fairly frequently on MTV in America, but the song failed to trouble sales charts either there or in Australia. The album featuring the track, Try Whistling This, debuted at the top of the ARIA charts three months earlier – which may explain the slow sales for this excellent single. Regardless of the reasons, this song deserves a far larger audience – just try and deny that amazing bridge!
