“Youngblood reaching the #1 position on the Hot 100 was a welcome and hard fought-for surprise”: EMI revels in 5SOS’ radio glory
The defining point of EMI Music Australia’s Q2 was their domestic roster. Seven of the 10 EMI artists that appear in the Q2 TMN Hot 100 are Australian, helping the label to a 7% share of the chart.
Alicia Reynolds, head of marketing & media EMI Music Australia, owes the result to radio’s support of great local music, especially the response to Hot 100 chart-toppers 5 Seconds Of Summer.
The Sydney band earned their maiden Australian airplay #1 single last quarter and have recently returned to #1 on the latest issue of the Hot 100.
“5SOS’ Youngblood reaching the #1 position on the Hot 100 was a welcome and hard fought-for surprise,” Reynolds told TMN. “It is a credit to the band, their artistic vision and drive to innovate, and Australian radio and streaming services led the world in supporting them.
Country star Keith Urban had a ripper of a quarter, his best yet at country radio. Parallel Line led the TMN Country Airplay Chart for 21 straight weeks and had massive support from commercial radio along the way, with the single also landing at #57 on the Q2 airplay chart.
According to Reynolds, we can expect more from Urban’s latest studio album Graffiti U in Q3, as well as a host of other singles from established and developing acts local artists.
“We have ongoing plans for Keith, the 5SOS album will deliver more hit singles and we have great things to come from Jess Kent and Odette.”
“We are also incredibly excited to release the Troye Sivan album and also continue to fuel the rise and rise of Alison Wonderland here and around the world.”
