Yearly Hot 100 market breakdown: Australian independent labels
MUSHROOM
Andy Grammer was by the far the strongestperformer across the independent labels in 2017.’Fresh Eyes’ (#7 year-end) was a force to be reckoned with at the start of 2017, peaking at #3 in February and staying in the chart for the entire duration of the year. That allowed Mushroomto garner a 4% market share on the Hot 40.
Contributions were also made by local singer-songwriter Vance Joy’s comeback track ‘Lay It On Me’ and Childish Gambino’s ‘Redbone’. Although peaking at #20, the latter was a permanent fixtureat radioand is DonaldGlover’s best performing commercial single to date.
INERTIA
Adele’s 2016 releases ‘Water Under The Bridge’ and ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’ carried Inertia’s chart hopes this year, with the label taking 2% of the Hot 40 market share. Both tracks made the year-end chart, coming in at #26 and #92, in no small part thanks to her sold-out Australian tour in March.
Though 2016 chart hero Sia failed to make much of an impression this calender year, Inertia will undoubtedly feel the impact of her departure in the years to come.
ETCETC
Despite counting towards Universal’s numbers, special mention goes out to Aussie indie label etcetc. Part of the TMRW Music group, etc experienced a strong year thanks to the resurgence of PNAU and a big contribution from UK act Jax Jones. ‘Chameleon’ and ‘You Don’t Know Me’ ft. RAYE saw the label take just under 5% of the Hot 40 market share, and 3% of the Hot 100.
