Two People debut at #1 on the Amrap Metro Chart
Community radio shows a huge amount of support for Australian music, with almost 40% of music played coming from local artists. Taste-making presenters excel at giving airtime to an incredible spread of what Aussie artists have to offer. The Amrap Metro and Amrap Regional Charts provide insight into what’s getting airplay and attention on community radio each week. Here’s the lowdown on some tunes charting this week.
Two People – ‘I’m Tied, To You’ (#1 Amrap Metro)
Taking out top spot on the Amrap Metropolitan charts this week are this duo formed from the ashes of Melbourne’s Snakadaktal. Their third single, ‘I’m Tied, To You’, is an introspective and wistful piece of electronic pop that takes it slow to build a dusky mood with percolating textures and lo-rhythms. It’s a great example of the sterling atmospheric productions populating the Australian music landscape right now. With a spot at Splendour In The Grass forthcoming, FBi Radio in Sydney and Hobart’s Edge Radio are leading the way in a mass of community radio airplay.
Okin Osan – ‘I Wanna Be That Girl’ (#8 Amrap Metro)
Riding into the Amrap Metropolitan top 10 with all her lo-fi garage-rock glory is Rose Chan and her self-described ‘pet project’, Okin Osan. “I Wanna Be That Girl” was penned when Chan was 16 but recorded at the ripe old age of 24, riffing on that classic subject matter of unrequited love in a sweet and zippy way, plus a whole lotta fuzz. This two-minute nugget is souping up radio shows on community stations like Brisbane’s 4ZZZ-FM and Radio Adelaide.
Pat Tierney – ‘The Midnight Bloom’ (#7 Amrap Regional)
Sitting somewhere between Harvest Moon-era Neil Young and the spacious slide guitar playing of Ry Cooder, roots artist Pat Tierney has returned with a new soulful single, ‘The Midnight Bloom’. The winner of best folk artist at the 2017 NCEIA Dolphin Awards, the NSW North Coast resident is about to go on tour through Queensland, NSW and Victoria. Tierney is getting great spins for ‘The Midnight Bloom’ at 3WAY-FM in Warrnambool, Victoria, Byron Bay’s Bay-FM and 2MCR in NSW’s Macarthur region.
G Flip – ‘Killing My Time’ (#8 Amrap Regional)
G Flip’s second single ‘Killing My Time’ is all about focus and right now the world seems squarely focussed on her ridiculously catchy track and her next move. The drummer turned pop production whizz is the latest addition to Future Classic’s supreme roster so you can expect peak level popularity – if the Melbournian hasn’t already reached it. Regional community radio has been serviced ‘Killing My Time’ via Amrap’s AirIt site and it’s unsurprisingly been picked up far and wide. 2BBB in NSW’s Bellingen, Victoria’s 979 FM and South Australia’s 5GTR are just a few stations that can’t get enough of this top prospect.
Emma Davis – ‘Best Of Times’ (#10 Amrap Metro)
Featuring the unmistakeable production style of Machine Translations’ J Walker and penchant for playful melodies and quirky rhythms, ‘Best of Times’ is the latest from Sydney’s enduring Emma Davis. Davis has moved a little from her folk base without losing the purity of her sound, adding synth washes and beats for a zippier paced than we’re previously accustomed to. However, ‘Best of Times’ just whets the appetite for Davis’ forthcoming album and it seems community radio feels the same, with Melbourne’s 3RRR, Sydney’s FBi and Radio Adelaide all on board.
