triple j Unearthed Pick of the Week – Samuel Dobson
Samuel Dobson
Customers…
In his brief history of sharing his music with triple j Unearthed we’ve seen Sydney rapper Samuel Dobson in a few different lights. Firstly it was as Shazza-T with some sweaty, late night raps (complete with a grill). Just recently Dobson was a finalist in our Hermitude remix competition for his flip of Ukiyo from Dark Night Sweet Light that served as an ode to his late grandfather and bridge partner, Ron.
It’s all hinted at Dobson’s incredible lyrical prowess and a songwriting perspective that ascends above the go-to hip hop topics of braggadocio that we’re seeing fully realised on this new one, Customers….
Off a forthcoming album just named Samuel, this one plummets way down to a chillingly dark place with the rapper unfurling a narrative of an ice addict scrounging for another hit and the dealer holding the cards.
It’s sickening, intense and totally exhilarating. I can’t recommend this guy highly enough – he’s a storyteller more than he is a rapper and this is one of his most engrossing ones.
