The Jezabels – Synthia
[Independent/MGM]
As The Jezabels fans digest the news of Heather Shannon’s health condition, which forced them to cancel their national tour, the Sydney band are readying the release of what should be their most acclaimed album yet.
Produced by Lachlan Mitchell, who helmed the AMP Award-winning Prisoner four years ago, Synthia crawls further into an experimental depth The Jezabels haven’t previously chartered. Touches of early MGMT puncture tracks like Stand and Deliver and If Ya Want Me, and the adumbrated wayward-pop on Smile acts as quirky addition. But if it was synth-driven humility they were after, they’ve slightly missed the mark.
Undoubtedly though, Synthia is a dream sequence to be taken seriously, with far more pleasures than misses; the seven-minute epic Stamina and the near breathtaking A Message From My Mothers Passed are testament to this.
