triple j Pick of the Week – Miike Snow
MIIKE SNOW
Heart Is Full
On a personal note, I’m a little bit obsessed by songwriters who craft top 40 pop hits and then go and make their own left-of-centre projects to pour their preferred creativity into. So when I heard Miike Snow were making a return after three years of silence, to say I was excited is a bit of an understatement.
Led by Swedish producers Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg – who also write under the name Bloodshy & Avant (and have written for Britney Spears, Madonna, and Katy Perry to name a few) – their sophomore album Happy To You was one of my favourite records of 2012.
Heart Is Full is the first taste of their third LP, conveniently titled III, and takes their noir-pop sound to a whole new level. Held together with a driving boom-bap beat and a hooky as hell soul sample, resident frontman Andrew Wyatt’s unmistakable vocals (who you can also hear on a tonne of Mark Ronson songs as well as the latest hit by Flume) acts as a call-to-arms to an unnamed lover.
The trio say their upcoming record is “the most innovative and creatively unified work thus far” – we’ll just have to wait until2016 to see that out.
