Triple J Pick Of The Week

LA ROUX
Uptight Downtown

Almost six years ago, Londoner Elly Jackson rose to fame with her debut single Quicksand under the guise La Roux. Over the next two years La Roux (along with co-writer Ben Langmaid) became one of the biggest names in electro-pop with their debut self-titled album, gaining two songs in the 2009 Hottest 100 (including #6 with Bulletproof), winning countless awards including a Grammy and selling over 2 million units worldwide.

Although the duo first started to work on their second record in 2009, they went on a hiatus in 2011 and progress stalled. Now she’s back with the first single off her sophomore album Trouble In Paradise. Elly now runs La Roux as a solo project after splitting with Ben over writing differences and the results are incredibly exciting. The first single off the LP has an almost David-Bowie-meets-Roxy-Music level of groove to it, drenched in a warmer, sexier vibe than the jagged electro-overload we heard on her debut.

Speaking to Matt & Alex on triple j this week, Elly said that Uptight Downtown is loosely based on the London riots of a few years ago, mirroring the energy of the events that happened in Brixton where she grew up.

The long awaited Trouble In Paradise sees the light of day on July 4.
