Tones and I likely to take ARIA chart record from Kylie this week
ARIA CEO Dan Rosen mentioned it was possible onstage at BIGSOUND this month, and we’re sure her team already knew it would happen, but now it’s official.
Tones And I has equaled the record for the most consecutive weeks at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart for an Australian Female Artist, with ‘Dance Monkey’.
The now ARIA accredited triple Platinum song ‘Dance Monkey’ has spent seven consecutive weeks at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, the same record currently held by Kylie Minogue’s 1987 release ‘Locomotion’.
The track is everywhere. ‘Dance Monkey’ came in at No. 3 on Apple Music’s new Shazam Discovery Top 50, a new global chart, which ranks the rising stars.
It was also the fastest rising single in the U.K. last month, and contributes to her 115 million streams in the past month alone.
“It’s growing at a rate I can’t even fathom,” Lemon Tree Music co-founder David Morgan told TIO. “We’re finding now more than ever with a streaming playlist, if it’s a good song with a great vocal it cuts through.”
Tones And I, who just kicked off her sold-out Australian headline tour at Adelaide’s Lion Arts Factory last week, is the first Australian artist this year to claim #1 and the first Australian female solo artist since 2015 to reach the coveted top spot.
Her debut EP THE KIDS ARE COMING, released August 30 via SME and Bad Batch, also features the ARIA accredited gold single ‘Never Seen The Rain’, and breakout single ‘Johnny Run Away ’, which she originally uploaded to triple j Unearthed.
Stream THE KIDS ARE COMING:
‘Johnny Run Away’ was the most played song on triple j for two weeks in March and is now certified Platinum.
We have every reason to believe Tones and I will dethrone our Kylie for the ARIA chart record this Saturday. We also have every reason to believe Kylie will be humbled and proud to pass the baton to another female pop act finding success both at home and overseas.
This November will see Tones and I head overseas for her first ever European headline tour, which includes shows in Cologne, London (perhaps a Kylie meet and greet is in order?), Berlin, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
