Brisbane band The Goon Sax have inked a deal with renowned US indie label Matador Records.

The signing announcement came hand in hand with news that the band will be releasing a new album with Matador in the first half of next year. The Goon Sax will remain with their current label Chapter Music in Australia and New Zealand.

In a video announcing the news, frontman Louis Forster said the group grew up listening to Matador signees Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Chris Knox and more.

“I was trying to channel some more lively YouTuber energy at the beginning of this one but it just made my accent break. Anyway, It’s hard to speak with the gravity of what this new music and signing means to us,” he said.

“It’s the culmination of what we’ve been working on since 2017 when we recorded we’re not talking, and I think it’s the most proud we’ve been of anything we’ve made together thus far. I won’t say more about it, we’ll be doing a lot of that soon!”

Matador is part of the Beggars group of labels, and is currently home to Belle and Sebastian, Cat Power, Julien Baker, Perfume Genius, Car Seat Headrest and more.

Last year, The Goon Sax signed an international publishing deal with Matador’s publishing arm, Mattitude. The band’s most recent full-length release was their 2018 album We’re Not Talking.
