After a sell-out five-night stint with The Man In Black – The Johnny Cash Story in Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre at the end of 2017, Tex Perkins is reprising his Helpmann Award-winning role.

This time it’s for a national tour. Perkins, along with The Tennessee Four and Rachael Tidd, hit the road throughout May and June.

The last Man In Black tour stretched out to 18 months and sold out some of the venues.

Interestingly, when Perkins was originally pitched the idea of doing a two-act Johnny Cash theatrical tribute he was initially hesitant… because he didn’t think playing one of his music idols would be challenging enough a role for him.

Cash was a game-changer in the US and international country music scene, selling 50 million records since he emerged in 1954.

Australia too embraced his music. Cash toured here consistently since his first visit in 1971, and put hits as the chart topping ’I Walk The Line’ ’Ring of Fire’, ’Folsom Prison Blues’, ‘A Boy Named Sue’ and ’Don’t Take Your Guns To Town’ into the charts.

He died in 2003 but his impact continues in new generations of country troubadours, inspired by his maverick attitude as much as his music.

As Jim McPherson’s dialogue in the show reveals, Cash had a turbulent early life on a southern cotton farm and was devastated with the death at 14 of his brother.

As Perkins said, “He had an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other”, at ease with “God and cocaine”.
