Taylor Swift is named Record Store Day 2022 global ambassador
Taylor Swift has been chosen to be the first-ever global ambassador for Record Store Day, with the popular singer helping to mark the 15th anniversary of the annual celebration.
“I’m very proud to be this year’s Ambassador for Record Store Day. The places where we go to browse and explore and discover music new and old have always been sacred to me,” Swift said in a press release.
“Record stores are so important because they help to perpetuate and foster music-loving as a passion.”
According to the press release, Swift will drop a “special RSD 2022 release” in honour of the 15th anniversary. During previous RSD events, she has released new versions of her albums 1989 and Speak Now, and released a 7″ vinyl single of Haim’s ‘Gasoline’, according to Billboard.
Anna Lundy and Doyle Davis of Grimey’s New and Pre-Loved Music, a store in Nashville, thanked Swift’s ongoing patronage of stores such as their own. “Swift has shown her love and support for independent record stores by not only supporting out shop specifically during the dark, early days of the pandemic [and] when she directly donated to help us support our staff,” they said in a press release.
According to Pitchfork, Pearl Jam, Brandi Carlile and Fred Armisten have been named Record Store Day ambassadors for the United States, but Swift is the first artist to be named global ambassador.
Co-founder of RSD Carrie Colliton said in the press release that the organisation was “pretty picky about the people we invite to ‘wear the sash'” to be an ambassador for Record Store Day.
“We always want to make sure those Ambassadors genuinely love record stores and are creative about ways to celebrate them. But mostly it’s a title we want people to have fun with, and we know that our RSD 2022 Ambassador loves having fun, loves music, and loves record stores,” Colliton said. “For our 15th Record Store Day, we’re teaming up with a woman who does all that and just happens to be one of the biggest artists on the planet.”
The appointment as Global Record Store Day Ambassador comes after the ‘All Too Well’ singer saw monumental success with her vinyl records last year. Her vinyl editions of Red (Taylor’s Version), Evermore and Folklore are ranked on MRC’s top 10 best selling vinyl albums of 2021, according to Forbes.
