Tame Impala, KUČKA dominate WA Music Awards

Tame Impala were hometown heroes last night in Perth for the 2015 WA Music Awards. Kevin Parker’s psych-rock project took out four of five nominations, for Best Album, Most Popular Act, Most Popular Live Act and Most Popular Music Video.

The band, which kicks off a world tour tomorrow, additionally saw its linchpin Parker take out an early Craft award for Best Male Vocalist in the lead up to the ceremony at Northbridge venue Jack Rabbit Slim’s.

Parker’s label Spinning Top Records took out The Music Network-presented award for Best Record Label.

Last year’s three-time winner KUČKA took out another two this year for Best experimental act and Best electronic act.

St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival was voted Most Popular Music Event, while North Fremantle’s Mojos Bar took out the award for Most Popular Venue. Mojos co-owner, promoter and musician Andrew Ryan also won the Golden WAMi for his contribution to the local music scene.

WA’s first lady of jazz, Helen Matthews and local promoter Paul Sloan were inducted into the WAM Hall of Fame.

Award winners Coin Banks (Best urban act); Morgan Bain (Best blues/roots act), Ruby Boots (Best country act), Methyl Ethel (Best pop act, Best single); Tired Lion (Best EP, Best rock act), Scalphunter (Best punk/hardcore act) and KUČKA are all performing at the 4-day long WAM Festival, which kicked off yesterday.
