Sydney DJ Dave Winnel has provided a cover of Darude’s viral hit ‘Sandstorm’ to help soundtrack ALDI Australia’s new Christmas campaign.

The supermarket chain’s new campaign, ‘You Can’t Overcook Christmas’, features Winnel’s rendition of the track which reportedly received Darude’s seal of approval.

In fact, this marks the first time that ‘Sandstorm’ has been covered in an official, commercial capacity.

Winnel, who is signed to TMRW Music, was approached for the task after Marcus Brooke Smith, music supervisor for Level Two Music, reached out to TMRW Music in the search for someone to rework the track.

ALDI Australia’s ‘You Can’t Cook Christmas’ campaign follows on from last year’s ‘Synchronised Santas’ ad run, which saw a slew of Santas synchronised swimming to a reimagined version of UK rapper Nadia Rose’s 2017 track ‘Skwod‘.

Other retail giants have been calling on local musicians to help with their Christmas campaigns this year. ALDI competitor Coles recruited Emily Soon to reimagine Neil Diamond’s ‘Beautiful Noise’ for its campaign.

Additionally, Kmart enlisted Jerome Farah for its campaign, which saw the artist cover Stevie Wonder’s ‘One Little Christmas Tree’.
