Spotify unveils crowdsourcing tool to fill gaps in song, album and artist info

Spotify has launched a new desktop tool called Line-In that the streaming platform believes will help in fill the gaps in information across 30 million songs.

Line-In allows listeners to make suggestions regarding the data listed for artists, individual songs and albums.

Clicking the three dots next to a song, album or artist, users can “suggest an edit” taking them tothis web form– where suggestions can be made regarding genre, language, artist roles, tages, aliases and composers.

“Over the past few months, we’ve confirmed our beliefs that listeners care deeply about the content on Spotify—they want the data to be useful and accurate,”a spokesperson for Spotify toldVariety.

“We’ve also seen that listeners are eager to describe the music they’re passionate about in ways beyond traditional concepts like genre and mood.”

After a submission is made, Spotify checks the submitted information against other users’ submissions – and keeps track of your performance as a suggester, which affects whether future suggestions are likely to be given much consideration.

There is also a dedicated FAQ page for Line-In, where the company further explains that “If you see something amiss or just plain ol missing, now you can help us correct it or add it.

“By suggesting edits … you’ll help artists connect with more fans, and help other people discover new music by fueling our personalization engines.”
