Spotify shares ’Women of AU & NZ’ playlist for International Women’s Day

Spotify has thrown its weight behind International Women’s Day, creating a playlist full of tracks by both emerging and more-established female artists from Australia and New Zealand.

The streaming platform published the ’Women of AU & NZ’ playlist this morning, featuring 100 songs.

“These are the women of now, defining the future of local talent,” reads the playlist description. “A true testament to our homegrown talent.”

There are tunes by the likes of Vera Blue, Sampa the Great, Tash Sultana, Alison Wonderland, Lorde, Camp Cope, Tkay Maidza, Mallrat, Amy Shark, Missy Higgins, Alex Lahey and Miss Blanks, just to name a few.

This week Spotify also announced a team-up with Smirnoff called the ’Smirnoff Equalizer’, a new tool that shows the gender breakdown of a user’s listening habits.

The equaliser shows the percentage of female vs male musicians you listen to on the streaming service to assist playlist creators in putting together more gender-balanced lists.

In a press release, Spotify and Smirnoff said the idea for the equaliser came from a lack of female representation in Spotify’s 2017 Year In Music statistics, where only two female artists featured in the top 10 songs.
