How South Summit Are Taking Over TikTok’s Digital Stage
Hailing from Western Australia, hybrid rock and reggae band, South Summit, have a certain easygoingness inherent in their music. It’s the type of sound that instantly puts you in a better mood.
The band draws inspiration from icons like Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, The Police, and Crowded House – musicians who have revolutionised genres through their authenticity and innovation.
For band member Nathan Osborne, it’s about capturing real emotion in their music. “Our sound is just a reflection of how we are feeling at the time, and we love to experiment with different genres,” he says.
It’s evident in their recent EP, ‘Tales Of The Yeti’, which reveals a group unafraid of artistic exploration. The name itself harbours a multitude of interpretations.
“Each song represents like a story or tale,” Nathan muses, inviting listeners to find their own meanings within the tracks.
“We love how everyone’s kinda got their own meaning behind these things.”
As one of Perth’s coolest emerging indie rock bands, South Summit are no stranger to the big stage. They’ve been regulars at festivals like Falls Festival, Groovin The Moo, and BIGSOUND for years.
Now, they’re bringing their songs and festival energy to an entirely new stage with TikTok’s LIVE Sunset Sessions.
“We always have said that the sunset set time at a festival is our dream, you just feel like it’s all kicking off and it’s just a feel good time,” Nathan explains.
“We want to bring this vibe into our live Sunset Session and just make it a fun time for everyone watching!”
As the name suggests, TikTok’s LIVE Sunset Sessions promises to bring a sunny aesthetic to audiences’ screens, as five different artists take the digital stage across multiple performances. For South Summit, this visual element is a key influence for their music.
“[Coming] from the West Coast of Australia, we are blessed with the best sunsets over the water. It would be rude not to use the beautiful scenery we have on offer,” he says.
“The sunset aesthetics also kind of compliment our music in a way, it’s feel-good, relaxing, which is what we’ll be trying to achieve with our stripped back set.”
So, what’s in store for the performance? “We’ve got a couple songs that have just come out from the new EP, so they’ll definitely be on the set list. Some old favourites as well. We might chuck a few new ones in there that we’re working on, but you’ll have to come find out!”
Beyond TikTok’s stage, South Summit is gearing up to tour their new EP in November, marking their first international gigs.
“We are touring our new EP around Australia and New Zealand which is super exciting,” Nathan says. “NZ will be our first international gigs which is sick. Aside from that, just more music, shows, good times ahead.” Tickets for the IRL shows will be announced on the band’s socials.
