SOTD: Illy answers the question, ‘Then What’?
Aussie hip hop superstar Illy is back with his first new song in two years, ‘Then What’.
The new track is cut from the same cloth as some of his biggest radio hits, with Illy’s clean and energetic combination of rapping and singing underpinned by production with pop sensibilities.
‘Then What’ was penned by Illy, with production by Swedish duo LIAS and Priest, as well as long-term collaborator M-Phazes.
It’s been a long gap in releases for the usually prolific songwriter, who has released five albums since he burst onto the scene in 2009.
“It’s been a minute since I put out new music, and I wanted my first song back to be something upbeat that was all me,” said Illy. “The waiting is as nerve-wracking and exciting as ever, but I’ve missed all of it.”
Illy’s best-performing tracks at commercial radio have been ‘Paper Cuts’ ft. Vera Blue and ‘Catch 22’ ft. Anne-Marie (both 2016) which peaked at #14 and #12 on the TMN Hot 100 respectively.
With the track debuting on triple j Breakfast this morning, ‘Then What’ is already guaranteed solid rotation on the public broadcaster.
It’s also certain to gain solid traction at commercial over the coming weeks.
