SOTD: Foals deliver another artful epic with ‘Sunday’
Particularly since the release of their sophomore album Total Life Forever, triple j favourites Foals have developed a name for creating records combining hard-hitting rock cuts with longer and more storied ballads.
The latest release from the UK rockers is titled ‘Sunday’ – the third track from their forthcoming album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – and fits the category of the latter.
It is cut from the same cloth as of their biggest tracks to date, including 2013’s ‘My Number’ and 2015’s ‘Mountain At My Gates’, both of which made it to #1 on the TMN Hot 100 Alternative Chart.
Musically, ‘Sunday’ is made up of two clear movements, as frontman Yannis Philippakis eases listeners into densely flowing musical textures to kick off the tune, which has a runtime of almost six minutes.
The building atmos climaxes as the band kick into an upbeat and heavy second movement, chock full of references to the sound the band debuted with over a decade ago.
With their prior single ‘Exits’ sitting at #16 on the Alternative Chart after spending two weeks on the TMN Hot 100, ‘Sunday’ shouldn’t be too far away from joining it.
